What you need to know before a climb
Preparing for Your Climb
Begin physical preparation at least 6–8 weeks before your climb. Focus on cardiovascular fitness, leg strength, balance and endurance through hiking, stair climbing, jogging or cycling. Practice walking with a light backpack and comfortable hiking boots.
Health & Safety
Your guide will monitor your wellbeing throughout the expedition. Stay hydrated, eat regularly, dress in layers and report any unusual symptoms immediately. Safety always takes priority over reaching the summit.
Altitude Sickness
Mount Kenya reaches 5,199 m, where altitude can affect anyone regardless of fitness. Symptoms include headache, nausea, fatigue, dizziness and loss of appetite. Ascend gradually, drink plenty of water and inform your guide if symptoms develop. Severe symptoms require immediate descent.
Mountain Weather
Expect rapid weather changes. Warm sunshine can quickly give way to rain, mist, freezing temperatures or strong winds. Always carry waterproof outer layers, warm clothing and sun protection.
Best Seasons for Climbing
January–March and June–October generally provide the best climbing conditions with clearer skies and drier trails. April–May and November are typically wetter, though the mountain remains beautiful year-round.
Packing Checklist
Essential items include waterproof hiking boots, thermal base layers, fleece jacket, insulated jacket, waterproof shell, trekking trousers, gloves, warm hat, headlamp, sunglasses, sunscreen, reusable water bottles or hydration bladder, personal medication and trekking poles.
Equipment Hire
Mount Kenya Guiding can arrange quality rental equipment including sleeping bags, trekking poles, waterproof gaiters, backpacks, insulated jackets and technical climbing gear where applicable.
Food & Hydration
Nutritious freshly prepared meals are served throughout the expedition. Guests should drink 3–4 litres of water daily. Inform us in advance of vegetarian, vegan, halal or allergy-related dietary requirements.
Travel to Kenya
Most international visitors arrive through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi. Airport transfers, hotel accommodation and transport to Nanyuki can be arranged as part of your package.
Environmental Responsibility
We follow Leave No Trace principles by carrying out waste, respecting wildlife, remaining on established trails and supporting conservation initiatives that protect Mount Kenya National Park.
Pre-Departure Checklist
Confirm passport validity, travel insurance, flights, accommodation, park requirements, emergency contacts, medication, clothing and equipment at least one week before departure.
Emergency Procedures
Our guides carry first-aid equipment and communication devices where possible. In an emergency, the guide will assess the situation, provide first response, coordinate evacuation if required and liaise with relevant authorities.
